WE GO DOWN TOGETHER
this was one of the first songs written for l’appel du vide (part 1).
when we were writing the EP, I wanted to try and explore - one song at a time - each of the ‘5 stages of grief’. it soon became apparent that grief is less a step-by-step process and more something akin to a botched exorcism. with splinters. on fire. nothing ‘stage’-y about it.
anyway.
this was the song for stage 1: ‘denial’.
i wanted to write a song rooted in the first few breaths of a new, young, relationship: that crazy-intense love and a distinct feeling of ‘us versus the world’.
it’s such a powerful feeling that’s so unique to that context.
it lives and dies so quickly - and if you’ve experienced it before then you know what it is when you go into it again - yet you find yourself believing it wholeheartedly anyway.
that naivety and intensity is such a fun emotional sandpit to play in as a songwriter and this one was a blast to put together. i remember how excited we got in the demo studio when we went from that determined and defiant verse, to this happy and upbeat chorus, to that utter DOOM of a breakdown in the middle 8.
man this was fun to write.

THE MUSIC VIDEO
making the music video was no less of an adventure.
we’d always wanted to do a ‘zero performance’, fully cinematic video - and we’d had the concept for this one sketched out for years: just waiting for the right song to come along.
it’s a really fun example of the kind of thing you can pull off on basically ZERO budget (story of my life lol).
we started filming at about 3 in the morning and it quickly dawned on us that running around with fake (but very convincing) guns was probably a terrible idea.
fortunately, we had some hi-vis vests in the back of the van so those of us not on camera wore those.
pro-tip: it’s wild what a hi-vis vest can do to make things look official. get away with anything.
we shot the whole thing in and around our home town of Keighley. despite the early morning and underlying fear of armed police taking us out, it was a really fun video to make.
my co-actor in the video is one of my best pals, Eloise Kerry, who did a fucking incredible job on stupid short notice.

LYRICS
I remember starlit drives and burning skies
Millions amassing to take out our eyes
we'll run our own way honey - run as fast as we can
And if they chase us - fuck 'em all, let 'em try
like the sun rises and sets
The tide never fucking forgets
We'll get up again tomorrow
Let's be a mystery
A living lottery
'Cause I can't be someone else
They'll never take us alive
All we have to do is survive
I found beauty, honey
It's our own little breed
WE’ll Leave 'em burning in broken hearts
So pack a book and all the hope that you got left
We'll disappear together, never see them again
Let's be a mystery
A living lottery
'Cause I can't be someone else
They'll never take us alive
All we have to do is survive
This is the last stand
Backs against the wall
'Cause we can't be anyone else
They'll never take us alive
All we have to do is survive
And if we go down, we go down together
Let's be a mystery
A living lottery
'Cause I can't be someone else
They'll never take us alive
All we have to do is survive
This is the last stand
Backs against the wall
'Cause we can't be anyone else
They'll never take us alive
All we have to do is survive
